If you're a Facebook friend, you would have seen the following status:

"...feels adult. I negotiated my credit card's APR - and it's LOWER! ^_^"

After some comments about how sexy it is for a woman to be money-wise and how I'm adept at arguing (as the skill has been demonstrated in Argumentation class), I got to thinking...

It's damn hard being an adult. (Bills and taxes are Hell on Earth.) At times, I wish the only choices I had to make were between two different types of Saturday morning cartoons. Instead, I've got to choose when I'll pay which bill and using which paycheck (which never seems to be enough, btw).

But I learned something, as I do each time I have to make an adult decision or am beaten over the head with adult consequences (bank overdraft fees are a bitch).

With this experience, I had to TAKE INITIATIVE. I had to call THEM. And I found out that they're pretty nice about giving you breaks - you just have to ask nicely for them.

And don't be frustrated with the foreigner on the other end, fellow Americans. He/she can't help his/her accent. So be nice - just explain what you would like without the nasty tone or American jargon, and he'll/she'll be all the happier working with you. Trust me. )

So another lesson learned: Life isn't going to GIVE you anything favorable. You have to TAKE INITIATIVE. Sometimes, you'll have to ASK (politely, of course). And sometimes, you'll have to TAKE. But THAT'S another lesson for another time....

PS: Oh, you want to know what I negotiated? Well, not only did I avoid a variable APR jump from 14.8% to 22.9%, but I lowered it to 13.9% for the next nine months. After nine months, it will NOT jump to 22.9%, but will return to 14.8%. And I learned that I have Platinum status and certain extra benefits - in their words, I'm a "valued customer." Nice, eh?
